Soy with Green Peas

(Serves 4)

4 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
pinch of asafetida
1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
1 onion, finely chopped
¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
¾ tablespoon coriander-cumin powder
½ teaspoon chili powder
1 medium tomato, finely chopped
1 cup green peas, boiled
½ cup soy nuggets/granules, soaked in hot water for 15-20 minutes
¼ teaspoon salt
pinch of garam masala
1 tablespoon coriander leaves, chopped


  1. Heat oil, add jeera, then asafoetida, ginger-garlic paste and sauté for 2 minutes.
  2. Add onion and sauté till golden brown.
  3. Add turmeric, coriander-cumin and chili powders.
  4. Add tomato and fry till the mixture till it leaves the sides of the pan.
  5. Add green peas, soy nuggets/granules and salt and sauté for 2 minutes.
  6. Add about 1½ cups of water and a pinch of garam masala.
  7. Cover and let simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Garnish with coriander.
